What are the belts for? The belt reflects achievements of goals. Every martial art style has its own system, and even within the various taekwondo styles there are ranks that reflect their own needs. However, it is obvious even to the layperson that the individual wearing a black belt has achieved a level of skill and maturation such that the instructors, in recognition of that accomplishment, have promoted and certified the individual to wear the black belt. The requirements for obtaining a ranking belt or black belt may vary widely from school to school and style to style.Often, outside those indvidual schools, the rank may not have much meaning. This is a common sense reason why schools often affiliate themselves with larger associations, such as the Williston Basin Taekwondo Association, the NWTA, the International Daemyung Moodo Federation, the USTU, the WTF, etc. This affiliation helps create a functional and uniform system for establishing ranks, rules, and regulations.
